Return from Exile and the Renewal of God's People | Dr. Nicholas Piotrowski | ITS Symposium

What if the Bible’s big story is a multi-layered drama of exile and return? In this lecture, Dr. Nicholas G. Piotrowski traces the Bible's exile theme from Eden to New Creation — showing why exile = death, return = resurrection, how the tabernacle and temple are a "portable Eden," and how Christ’s cross and empty tomb secure our way back into God’s presence and shape the church’s mission today. 0:00 — Opening Remarks 1:09 — Dante’s Divine Comedy and Personal Exile 3:13 — Israel’s Historic Exile 5:48 — Exile: The Theological Crisis of the Old Testament 9:53 — Exile: Humanity’s Story 11:27 — Thesis: The Bible as a Multi-Layered Story of Exile & Return 12:30 — Eden: Land, King, and Temple in the Beginning 14:57 — The Theme of "Return From Exile" (Significance of the East & West) 15:52 — Returns from Exile in the Exodus 16:58 — Tabernacle as "Portable Eden" (Symbolism of Tabernacle) 19:49 — Understanding The Priesthood & Day of Atonement 22:24 — Israel as a Kingdom of Priests for the Nations (1 Kings 10) 25:12 — Exile as Death, Return as Resurrection 27:46 — Abraham: The First Return from Exile 29:16 — Haggadah: Teaching the Exodus with Images 31:20 — Israel: Reenacting Adam & Eve's Story 31:47 — Prophets: Foretelling a Future Return from Exile (Isaiah 9) 32:58 — Jesus' Birth: The Kings' Return from Exile 34:00 — Jesus’ Teaching: The End-of-Exile Light (Matthew 4) 34:33 — Jesus' Miracles: Signals of the End of Exile 35:10 — Jesus' Death: His Personal Exile (Galatians 3) 38:58 — Jesus' Resurrection & Ascension: End of Exile (Hebrews) 40:43 — Union with Christ: We Have Returned from Exile (Ephesians) 42:32 — New Life Now: Regeneration & Good Works 44:06 — Already/Not-Yet: Dying, Yet Truly Alive in Christ 45:03 — Revelation's Vision: Humanity Finally Comes Home 49:38 — Who We Are: Images of God United to Christ 51:19 — Where We Are: Inside a Meaningful Story 55:57 — When We Are: On the Doorstep of Eden 56:39 — Why We Are: Help Others Return from Exile 58:30 — Narnia: Longing for the Truer World For those interested in going deeper, learn more about Indianapolis Theological Seminary and how to take the next step toward a Christ-centered journey of theological education: https://go.indysem.org/request-more-info Filmed at College Park Church in Indianapolis, IN on March 25th, 2025. #ReturnFromExile #BiblicalTheology #BibleStudy #NewCreation
