The internet says 14 CAT trucks. We found 13 Komatsu 930Es, 3 P&H 4100C shovels at $45M each, and 83,000 gallons of diesel — all parked in what the geologists called the safe zone. The slide covered 95% of the pit floor. Every source is listed in the description. If you worked at Kennecott or know someone who did, we want to hear from you.

Big corporations are about as efficient as big government.

I remember when this happened. I lived very close to it, seems like insurance fraud to me.

Yes I would have all equipment removed knowing that information! You can have all the models you want but it’s better to error on the side of safety.

If it was bad enough to evaluate the workers, I would have brought all equipment out with the workers.

I suppose the mining business analysts estimated the cost of lost production (by shutting down operations & moving the equipment to higher & safer ground), & compared that cost to the cost of the equipment that could be lost (buried) if the pit wall collapsed, & the mining execs, having been presented with the information from the analysts, decided to compromise by stopping operations & evacuating the workers, but without removing the equipment, from the mine floor.

It seems to me that the cost of losing the equipment (possibly $100 million, or greater, for the equipment & facilities located at the mine floor) would have been much greater than the cost of lost mining revenue due to stopping operations, even for several days.

whether I trusted the models or not I would have removed the trucks and other equipment.

I am a very cautious person... Cost of moving everything to the top...versus cost of total loss of everything left on the bottom...? ? ? Seems simple enough.

''Better be safe than sorry''.......the choice is easy, but the company choose..... ''sorry''.

I got to view down into the pit one night back in the late 1980s. Extra-curricular activities, ya might say. I had been working at the Army vehicle repair base near Tooele, as one of a team of Hazardous Waste Smoke Jumpers.

The trucks could have driven out. Shovels move slow especially with no power cables. Must be more to the story
