Lincoln Park Was ABANDONED & Left to ROT — How Massachusetts Lost Its Favorite Amusement Park

In 1894, the Union Street Railway Company purchased 46 acres of woodland on the border between Dartmouth and Westport. The company faced a simple problem: its streetcars carried workers during the week but sat nearly empty on Sundays. Its solution was equally simple. Create a destination at the end of the line. Executives cleared pine trees, installed outdoor grills, and promoted the land as an affordable weekend escape for local working families. What became Lincoln Park was not originally designed as an amusement park. It was a corporate strategy created to sell more streetcar tickets. By the late 1890s, the company invited the public to choose an official name for the property. The decision gave residents a sense of ownership over a commercial asset and helped transform a quiet picnic grove into one of Southeastern Massachusetts’ most beloved gathering places. Then the automobile changed everything. By 1941, affordable cars had broken the streetcar company’s control over local travel. Families could drive to ocean beaches and larger regional attractions instead of remaining tied to fixed trolley routes. To keep Lincoln Park alive, the property needed to become something entirely different. Businessman John Collins purchased the 46-acre site for $40,000 and invested another $150,000 in its transformation. He built a modern 14-lane bowling alley, expanded the dance hall into an enormous indoor ballroom, and filled the quiet woodland with mechanical entertainment. His investment dragged the property out of the nineteenth century and into the modern amusement era. For generations, the gamble worked. The park became part of local childhoods, family traditions, and summer memories. But changing economics eventually overwhelmed the institution, leaving its rides silent and its structures exposed to years of decay. This is the story of how a streetcar company created Lincoln Park, how one investor transformed it into a regional entertainment empire, and why Massachusetts ultimately allowed its favorite amusement park to be abandoned and left to rot. #lincolnpark #abandoned #park
