Hand on heart, I am English and sometimes local pronunciations can confuse us. The maddest I ever came across was a village in Norfolk called Happisburgh which is pronounced Hays-boro.

That's it. I'm not accepting complaints about silent letters in French and how inconsistent the spelling is anymore :)

A Canadian airman in the UK during WWII got a little fed up with the arcane pronunciation of local place names. When asked where he was from he took to answering “Niffels”. In response to the blank looks he’d translate for his victim, “Niagara Falls”.

And when our ancestors left for New England, they brought those crazy names and pronunciations with them!

My husband was British. I visited many places when we lived there and learned British pronunciations from him. As a poet, I love how the history is contained in the spelling and I believe handwritten material is a kinetic expression of that idea, giving the history and culture energy in the present. I learned about the Roman suffixes while living there. Some of his family lived in Towcester. I enjoyed your energy and this lesson.
