If I started Blender TODAY, this is what I would focus on.

Yeah the donut tutorial isn't about learning art, it's about learning to use blender

The entire 9 minutes of this video can be summarized with, "it's going to suck until it doesn't".

I did the donut tutorial 3 years ago. The donut tutorial is just a crash course on the blender interface... that's pretty much it really.

Well what I learned from getting into Blender TODAY is that so many people hate on the donut tutorial to such an unnecessary degree for attention

I never really considered the donut a "learning" tutorial, more a "look what you can do step by step" tutorial to give you that sense of "look what I made" and inspire you to go further.

Bro, when I was 13, I did the donut tutorial and then tried to jump straight into character modeling and created the most disgusting abomination ive ever made

which is a bunch of mangled and stretched out spheres that I haphazardly sculpted into "body parts" and obviously i had to sculpt the face too and it does not even look remotely human

I have tried again years later tho and now I finally know what I'm doing

the donut tutorial is great for beginners to understand what one can do with blender. the idea is not to make a donut, it's to see as much of the software as reasonably possible without making it just a list of features.

it shows you everything from how to move an object, all the way to lighting a scene. it goes through primitives, modeling, sculpting, texturing, now even geometry nodes, etc. there's really no tutorial that's as comprehensive that targets absolute beginners.

the ugly phase is so real!!! every time i make a clothing piece, it looks sooo bad in the beginning, but then it ends up being very pretty in the end!

The first time I modelled a character's torso by following a tutorial was when I actually felt some genuine happiness because I felt like some part of my weakness is leaving me. Watching this just gave me some drive to go repeat modelling the same character over and over until the steps are etched in my head.

i never completed the donut because if i remember correctly something didn't work out and crucially i just didn't want to do it, i wasn't interested in making a donut. What i did was not smart (attempting to make a 1911 as my first ever model), it turned out surprisingly fine actually but of course as an actually usable model it was very shit and kind of broken but i was happy that i could get close to making what i actually wanted and that is pretty much how i continued learning and using blender, trying to make things that i want to make, with a billion tutorials, slowly but doing that, not an effective method but a method that kept me interested and wanting to do more

TLDR: Maybe the real treasure was NOT the friends we made along the way but the final result.
