I remember when I first reached out to Amber Denker back in 2020 and received a scanned copy of the treatment for The Works a year later. I was so invested in The Works and everything it could've been after reading it, and I thought this was the greatest lost media find I could ever do. Little did I know years later there would be so much more to uncover with not only this movie, but everything else with Computer Graphics Lab. I'm glad I was there at the beginning of this massive search to preserve a crucial player in the early history of computer animation, and I'm also glad I could contribute some small animations for the final result of that search, Thank you so much for having me Ziggy!

Incredible that you got Ed Catmull and Alvy Smith. Alvy is a fantastic genius who has unfairly been scrubbed away from Pixar's history even tho he directed their first short.

Also something I realized, with the availability of easy CGI nowadays, we could probably complete The Works no problem. If anything it would be a good tribute to the people who spent many hours working on it.

When I was a kid in the mid 80s, there was a late night airing of Yellow Submarine hosted by Bruce Morrow. My father taped it for us. During one of the breaks, Morrow interviewed someone who worked on the film. When he asked him what he was working on next, the guy stuck a strawberry in Morrow's mouth. He turned to the camera, pointed at it, and said, "Strawberry Fields!" TIL that wasn't just a joke and that they were actually making that.

I toured the NYIT Computer Graphics Lab in 1983 when I had first joined Omnibus. This film does a pretty good job of showing the chaotic progression of those early pioneers fueled by Dr Schure's seemingly endless ca$h and drive to make CGI happen. Quantum leaps like that never happen as quickly as people want it to! Computers were achingly slow, and its amazing the fundamental capability all these creative people were able to demonstrate with such primitive tools! Omnibus licensed Tween in the Toronto office but never really did much with it.

I was an Images2+ user from 1985-90… the OG 24 bit paint box. Before there was Photoshop, there was Images from CGL. Also proud to say that I met Lance Williams at that time…. Still greatly missed.

26:52 Ironic how that 56-hour transition could be done real-time on an Ampex ADO about a year later

While NYIT did not become the next Disney they became something even better in my eyes. They became the next Fleischer studios including the inventing and perfecting the basic techniques used in ALL 3D animation today

these early shots from the works match the graphical complexity/fluidity of PS1 games (albeit pre vs. live renderings), which wouldn't come along for another 14-15 yearss!!!!!!
