I’m not a lyricist, but I am a musician, and what gets me every time about Part Of Your World, is the way she pauses and then holds “burn”. In the previous instances of her trying to recall words, they’re very short and quiet and she kind of chuckles while she says them. “What is a fire and why does it—what’s the word—burn?” essentially doubles as a metaphor for her want. A burning desire, a yearning, etc. It also falls right before the climax of the song, and it plays with the rule of threes; this time she’s serious. It’s ALSO bonkers because being underwater she can’t possibly understand fire, but yet she kind of intrinsically understands it as a metaphor, furthering the idea that up there is where she really belongs. The song nearly makes me cry every time I think about it, haha.

Anyway I love your videos!!! I love your analysis! You rock!!!

It's a shame that copyright had to ruin our fun this time... The video still came out great!! Thank you for letting me do some of the editing!!!

"I believe this choice is what defined Disney Magic during the Renaissance. It's not Wishing on a Star, it's jumping on opportunity. It's challenging what seems permanent. It's being faced with a pivotal moment and making a choice." Oof! Astor! You already gave a fantastic and enjoyable video breakdown; you didn't have to go for the jugular right at the finish line!

You know, I was never all that into The Little Mermaid as a kid because I was too much of a misanthropic cynic to relate to a mermaid wanting to be a human, but your explanations have me sobbing in a real Frank Reynolds "I get it now" moment.

the word "fathom" is also associted intrinsically with mystery, because "fathom" is used as a verb to mean investigating or understanding something, as generalized from its original verb function referring to measuring depth with a rope.

Glen Keane’a animation of Ariel was the whipped cream on the top of Ashman’s and Menkin’s sundae! The team effort between animators and composers was flawless.

I liked your mention of the directed breaths in Part of Your World. Cause it definitely pays off. It gives a very unique pacing, and each breath feels more like another lyric rather than just "I have to breathe or else I'll die" lol.

Jodi Benson is an underrated VA (really wish Disney helped their VAs get more work after doing their films), and this song is SO OFTEN misconstrued. I really wish more people understood that this happens BEFORE she meets Eric, as well as WHY she's interested in Eric but doesn't spend all her time with him exclusively.

I’ve never noticed that Sebastian used some of the language from ‘Part of Your World!’ He wanted to show Ariel that it is better under the sea. But she has a dream, one that came true at such a great cost. Though all ends well! Great video! ❤

I actually had to slow down the video because your breakdowns were so densely meaningful and profound. You’re hands down the best “video essay-ist” on the platform if that term even fits cus you’re the only one I consistently come back to at least. Looking forward to part 2!!
