We rode canoes, rode horses. The 70's and 80's were the best times at Belle Isle.

Back in the 60's we didn't have Air Conditioning, we'd go to Belle Isle, spread out a blanket by the riverside & lay there to chill out!❤🎉
It was wonderful & romantic.❤❤❤❤❤❤

I was a member of the first class of adult rowing students at the Boat Club in the mid 80s. We didnt realize how lucky we were to have Olympians as instructors. White Water Rowing was what we experienced on the Detroit river, battling the current, the huge ships, and the weather. It remains one of my fondest memories. ❤

December of 1959 I turned 10 yrs old, and received my first pair of ice skates. My dad, born and raised in Hamtramck, took me to Belle Isle to learn to skate. There was an indoor area for hot chocolate and snacks where he tied my new skates on my feet and we struck out onto the ice. After some time of instruction and falls and laughs, he told me to stay in one small area while he went on to skate for a short while himself. I watched as he leaned forward, bent his knees, and put one arm across his Lower back. He shot off swinging the other arm back and forth and flew around a small island in the center of the skate area. I was in awe! I had no idea my dad could skate like that! I knew I had the most wonderful father in the world! This is one of the fondest memories of my life, and it happened at Belle Isle! I later remember going canoeing with a youth group on the island.
Some years later again , I attended the Detroit Love-In on Belle Isle. Another memorable event. A day of music, sharing and peace, acceptance of all people, getting together for fun on the iconic island! What a great Detroit treasure, and a personal one too!

Absolutely one of my favorite places in all of Detroit. I live a few miles from here. Whenever I'm having a bad day I come here and park on South tip and watch the sun go down with the beautiful skyline and bridges in the background. Love it here. So happy the State took it over.
