I've been up Mt LeConte five times. Really loved the area. Used different routes. Over my hiking experiences I've learned several things, never deviate from a planned route without informing someone, leaving a note or a marker showing new direction and never, ever drink directly form a stream, always boil or at least treat the water.

Only 70 yards off trail?? Makes me suspicious of foul play. He could have heard other hikers from that distance if he felt lose.

Bare with me, retired Chem prof.here. CO poisoning is cumulative. It blocks the site where oxygen binds to hemoglobin. It has a greater affinity in fact than oxygen so it stays bound until the red blood site is destroyed naturally by the body or the person is placed in a hyperbaric chamber. The person just becomes more and more sleepy and produces flu-like symptoms. It would not be a stretch to think that the father was concerned for his daughter and thought he could cook quickly or use the stove briefly for warmth not realizing that even ventilating after the use of the stove would not remove the CO from their systems.
