"Luck is not a magic force. It is an acknowledgment of the preponderance of factors outside of any on individual's control. The world act's more forcefully than any one person." Brennan really has a gift for words.

Brennan's "Tough", echoing Zuko's "That's rough, buddy".

"It's not bleak it's cool and relatable, you'll like it when I say it" Brennan Lee Mulligan; about to say some of the saddest darkest shit a human can say for the fifteenth time.

Brennan, I started DMing in person after years of gaming with online friends, not because I was a big fan of yours (although I have been for years) but because a friend of mine who I NEVER thought would be interested in DnD saw the Dungeons and Drag Queens shows. She was the one who brought it up to me, and now there are four more girls in their twenties drinking beer and slinging dice around a table. Without the visibility your shows and other actual plays bring, there wouldn’t be nearly as many people gathering the courage to play.

I would say Actual Plays create more games than they replace. I started DMing because Brennan looked to camera in Adventuring Academy and said “You are ready to DM”

"Would a man not doing well have this much joie de vivre?" he asked, desperately.

On the subject of 'killing' home games: People have talked about the 'Matt Mercer Effect' - this idea that the popularity of CR, while it upped the popularity of D&D generally, also led a lot of people to expect all D&D games to function like CR and expected their DMs to be as good at accents, sound effects, and storytelling as Matt Mercer. I can't speak to how true that is but I can imagine that someone might be discouraged to try DMing specifically if they're expected to be as good at voices as a professional voice actor and generally as good at DMing as a professional DM. HOWEVER, personally as a girl growing up in India, I would literally have never even considered that D&D is something I might enjoy if it hadn't been for shows like Dimension 20, and now I have been in a 4+yr long home game with other D20 fans I befriended on twitter. I'm sure there are some people who really enjoy TTRPG content and don't really want to play themselves, but I also think that a large number of people started playing the game BECAUSE of D20. D20 especially feels unique among TTRPG shows because the kinds of genres, the focus on comedy, and the shorter campaigns make the game feel way more accessible. I watched D20 for years before I got the chance to finally play, but I wouldn't have got that chance if shows like D20, NADDPOD, CR, TAZ (what other acronyms are there lol) didn't get so popular and thus lead to services like Roll20, D&DBeyond, etc becoming more successful. Rising tide lifts all ships! <br>Also, I think that as more and more TTRPG shows take off, we start to see a diversity in GMing styles and things like 'Matt Mercer Effect' become less important, because we see that you can GM really well in v different ways. Aabria Iyengar famously doesn't do more than a couple accents, and she's still a kickass GM!

Came for the D&D talk, stayed for the discussion of making art under capitalism
