As someone who works at an SPCA in animal welfare, just want to share this little known fact - the Amish are notorious for their treatment of animals. MANY of some of the absolute worst, most inbred, congenitally defected dogs we get at our shelter and from other rescues are from Amish puppy mills. There’s no oversight. Their horses are also treated horrendously. Vet care is practically nonexistent. It’s truly awful

I feel like they are SO CLOSE with the “you should chose it” thing and then just really fumble it at the end with the “if you leave everyone you’ve ever known will hate you forever” thing.

My boyfriends sister is in med school and she told us a story about a young boy (like under 16) who fell off the roof while building those incredible barns and the only way he could survive is if he was helicoptered to the hospital and put into surgery immediately. The elders were okay with him getting surgery but took so long deciding whether or not he was allowed in the helicopter that he died. That really stuck with me.

Having been raised Amish I can say this is a very clean G rated telling. The amount of abuse that goes on in these communities is disgusting.  To say there is no pre marital sex allowed is correct, but does not always happen. SA runs rampart, sex is never discussed or explained. Girls that end up pregnant by no fault of their own are shipped off to have the baby and have it taken away. I could go on for days...

I used to be a librarian in ohio, and we would get Amish people come in, and the girls on rumspringa would check out spicy novels and chick flicks
