I have lived in Chicago for 33 years and its suburbs since then and I am 60. I think the writer is a little bit confused about how big the area of its “metropolitan” can be in places. Near the lake front the “lighted area” would go all the way to Milwaukee, WI and to Michigan City, IN. Going west it isn’t nearly as far but it is still at least a two hour drive on expressways probably going close to 80 MPH to keep up with traffic between jams. There are are a lot of state troopers out there constantly patrolling and I mean a real lot.
