My very first Cuban sandwich was in Tampa. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant that we went to being I was only 5. We were visiting Busch Gardens Tampa Bay from New York and we made a stop at the restaurant on our way back to the hotel. I’ve never had a Cuban sandwich as good as that first sandwich and I’ve had dozens of Cuban sandwiches from different restaurants in my life

As a cubanito, I grew up eating Cuban sandwiches (and media noches) in New Jersey. Still love them, just no pickles.

That’s right!! Ybor City, baby!!🙌🏼 La Segunda bakery… the BEST Cuban bread hands down! Key West was an origin point of Cubans and the mixto sandwich. From 1890-1950, Tampa/Ybor had the largest enclave of Cubans in the U.S. Then, the Cuban revolution at the end of the 1950’s saw an influx of Cubans to Miami. It was in Tampa with the cigar factory workers that the Cuban sandwich that we know today came about. Yes, it DOES have salami! Sorry, not sorry Miami! Researchers have found records of sandwiches in Cuba back in the 1950’s, had just like the Tampa Cuban, SALAMI!! Boom! Check out the book: The Cuban Sandwich A History in Layers by Andrew T. Huse, Barbara C. Cruz, and Jeff Houck. I am a native Tampanian and am very passionate about Cuban sandwiches and if you try to tell me that mayo goes on a Cuban, I will slap the words out yo mouth!! 😂
