I work as a welder on a dredging vessel in the southern and gulf coast of the US. We have a terrible time finding a welder to take the opposite shift from mine. sometimes guys can weld ok, but they have none of the other skills, and with only one welder on board at a time, you gotta know how to fix torches, trouble shoot machines, rig and strap heavy materials, cut and measure, fabricate. Welding isnt enough and in many ways is the minor part of the job. Being able to look at a broken piece of equipment and figure out a way to make it work again is far more valuable on board.

The last he said, honestly is what got me hired as a shop assistant and set me apart from the rest, ever since I started at the welding school, I was the ONLY one pushing that broom cleaning the whole aisle, and if I had some extra time the other aisle too, like 5 students where up in the line trying to get hired; and they picked me cus of that; I even didn’t knew they were hiring, 😂so yeah what he said it goes a long way and is golden advice there

+ know your PPE, Know the Chemistry , not welding Zink nor welding break cleaner, Know your suppliers, and know how to and how much money to ask for the job-

When I took a welding test at a shipyard the first thing the guy did once I started welding was move the settings to see if I could set the machine.

Good video! I learned welding at the local community college. There were some things we never discussed. When I met the boss on a new job, obviously I wanted to make a good first impression. I never took anything for granted. I practiced for my welding test. I made sure my job box was well stocked with extra grinders (with guards), no patched-up extension cords. When My boss wanted to see me weld, I set my machine up, telling him exactly what I was doing, my choice of rod, and did the hardest welds first. On the job, I kept moving, when things were slow. I stayed busy cleaning my work area, putting scrap in the dumpster, straightening the toolbox, etc. I never had to try and look busy.
