The Soviet Officer Who Saved Humanity Was Not Rewarded | Stanislav Petrov's Story

On 27 January 2026 the Doomsday Clock was moved to 85 seconds to midnight — the closest it has stood since the clock was created in 1947. Srijan Pal Singh breaks down what that number actually measures, and why it moved. It is not a countdown and not a bomb timer — it is a threat assessment, first set at seven minutes to midnight after the Second World War by the same physicists who built the bomb and then spent the rest of their lives warning about it. Singh traces how the hand crawled backwards when the Soviet Union collapsed and a single superpower was left standing, and why a multipolar world — Ukraine, West Asia, the Taiwan Strait, arsenals expanding on three sides at once — has now pushed it closer to midnight than the Cold War ever managed. The case study at the centre of the clip is 26 September 1983. A Soviet duty officer at an observatory outside Moscow watched the Oko early-warning system report five incoming American missiles, with roughly 15 minutes to impact and a 26-minute window to recommend a counter-launch. He reasoned that a genuine first strike would not be five missiles when the other side held around 2,000 — and broke the chain of command to call it a false alarm. He was right: the satellite had read sunlight bouncing off high-altitude cloud as launch plumes. He was demoted, pushed out of the army, and the entire episode stayed classified until the late 1990s. Singh's argument is that the man in that chair is precisely the component we are now engineering out — because dual-use missiles cannot be identified as nuclear or conventional in flight, and an autonomous targeting system has a goal but no doubt, no restraint, and no concept of a non-combatant. ▶ Full Episode: Kalam's Nuclear Warning, Nuclear War anywh...
