I'd like to nominate the .284 Winchester for a 10 minute talk, not for it's success, but for its role  in pushing cartridge development forward.

Nope, not dead...just not hyped in commercialization.  The 338-06 is an awesome cartridge for those who know.

Thanks for covering the 338-06. It is a favorite cartridge that never got the respect it deserves.

Also, because of "10 minute talks" I now own a .35 Whelen.

Took my 1-month old baby for a drive to run errands and he would not stop crying. Then I turned on the latest episode and he immediately fell asleep to the sound of Mark’s voice. Mark, I owe ya one for that.

I had a 338 Win Mag for years and never needed nor cared for the recoil. Found myself down loading it to 338-06 levels and it did everything I ever needed it to do. A 200gr Accubond at ~2700fps is very effective.

As an old guy I can remember all the 8mm-06's that were made after WW2. Those worked well and could not hold a candle to the modern loads in the 338-06 and bullets we have today.  Given the history of the 98's that were being converted most loads were conservative.  I've got no doubt this round is a diamond in the rough most guys would love.

Love this caliber. As someone mentioned, I had JES reboring make my 338/06 from a Browning BLR that started life as a 270 Winchester.  Everyone thought I was nuts, then they shot it at a 4 inch steel plate at 200 yards. Their still smiling.  I agree with Ryan. I have some properly headstamped brass. However, it is so easy to make from so many 30-06 cases that I've been given by friends that I will never run out of brass. It hits with authority and does not have outrageous recoil, what else can you ask in a legitimate hunting caliber.

As the owner of the 338 rpm that you (Ryan) put the scope on, allow me to clarify a couple things. It was my dad’s brown bear hunt, not mine. If I had put a scope on it sooner than I did, that rifle could’ve been used for the hunt. And all due respect, I know exactly what I had. But was awesome to meet you and talk calibers briefly.

Ryan, the 25-06 is a brilliant platform for the long heavies being produced. Just gotta get a fast twist and throat job and it’s killer. Think 3100fps with the 138 A-Tip or 3300 with a little-known 108gr Apex Afterburner. Retumbo is your friend. Most actions that house 25-06s are 700 style and they have ample room for doing this
