We never thanked The Kim family for destroying the death star or for flying that jet into the alien ship in independence day .

Thank you for being fairly unbiased VTH. It's one thing to advocate for an ideology, but it is a whole other thing to disguise that advocacy as "simply the truth." I believe you did a good job counteracting that in this video.

My issue with the video was that it presented itself as being the truth, had it been about the Korean War through the north’s perspective it would’ve been an interesting viewpoint but presenting it as the truth is just as bad as the millions of videos painting the south’s government as purely good as he had an issue with at the start

I showed this to my Korean GF and ask her opinion. She did say the video captures South Koreas hatred of Syngam Rhee.

I don't get why people pretend Japan didn't have war trials too. I'm glad you pointed out how inaccurate that was.

27:52 There is no "debate" on what happened. North Korea attacked the South and started the war. In 1994, after the USSR collapsed, President Kim Young Sam (President of South Korea at the time) visited President Boris Yeltsin in Russia to form a friendly relationship between two countries. One of the things Yeltsin gave Kim were classified USSR documents, one of them which acknowledged that the war was started by Kim Ill Sung of North Korea after he begged permission from Stalin multiple times. Stalin, who had feared another great war, was hesitant, but gave in after Kim Ill Sung promised a swift war. It was said that Stalin was furious when he learned that the North was getting their butts kicked by the US force in later stages of war.

The Korean War was one of the wars I never learned about until like after college. Only because people say “North bad, South good”. But during that time the South also had a dictator (kind of), it wasn’t like they were also “good” either during the War. The only reason I know about the Korean War was because one of my old neighbor ran from North Korea during the War.

I am retired military, my wife is Korean, our son served six years there in the US Army, and our daughter was born in Seoul. I lived there five different times for a total of 11+ years. VTH is right — a considerable amount of pro-north Korean and communist bias. The video quoted Bruce Cumings’ book. It’s a good reference, but a much better one for a truly balanced account of the Korean War (including the decades leading up to it) is T.R. Fehrenbach’s “This Kind of War”.

VTH, you're correct to listen to your gut.

The biggest issue with his analysis of the history of Korea prior to the Korean War is that he's applying a modern lens to an earlier time period. The idea that there was something inherently wrong with a lack of middle class during the 1800's in an Asia country is, frankly, absurd. Feudalistic government structures were present in Asia much longer than in Europe. I don't have issues with a true representation of BOTH regimes and their record on human rights violations. The ROK may not have had issues changing their culture post Japanese occupation, but we can clearly see today that the government which arose in the South is inherently less prone to commit human rights violations. It seems to me that Rhee was the problem, not the idea of democratic government. I don't feel he fairly portrayed both sides, given he opened that can of worms.

In all honesty, of everything history, the Korean War was the second most interesting war aside from obviously World War II for me. Just found it crazy that its called the forgotten war since it was just as large, if not larger, than the Vietnam War.
