We had just arrived in London from the US for the first time the same day that Saddam invaded Kuwait, and had no idea what was going on. At first we thought it was some British comedy program on the tv at the hotel until we saw the newspapers on the streets. It made for a very interesting first visit overseas for us.

This lead-up is way more interesting and important to understand than the actual battle.

1:15 how is it an antisemitic theory to suggest that Israel has major influence over American politics, AIPAC has been a driver of foreign policy for both republican and democrat executives since Israel became a country.

Strangely this video doesn't mention the question of slant drilling by Kuwait of oil fields inside Iraq (and there is reportedly truth in this) nor the key meeting between the US ambassador with Saddam, who is said to have informed him that "the United States does not take sides in inter-Arab quarells".

Saddam took this statement as a green light from the US to go ahead with his invasion of Kuwait.

Finally, Desert Storm is getting a full on series from you guys! Also asking a question, Will you ever cover the Soviet-Afghan War in full? Its a fascinating conflict that is mostly overshadowed by American campaign in the country.

Hussein neglected to realize that the reason why the price of oil was so high was because of conflict in the area. Iran and Iraq attacked tankers in the Persian Gulf, leading to the increase in the cost of oil. When the Iran-Iraq War ended, the price of oil dropped.

According to Iraqi documents, assistance in the development of chemical weapons was obtained from firms in many countries, including the United States, West Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and France. A report stated that Dutch, Australian, Italian, French and both West and East German companies were involved in the export of raw materials to Iraqi chemical weapons factories.[7]
