Within 6 weeks of my CABG, I was back to working out in my home gym, usual routine but starting with lighter resistance. Post-operatively, I had very little sternal pain, though my whole rib cage seemed sore. I am convinced that my recovery went so quickly because my pre-op preparation had been so thorough. In the two months between my diagnosis and the surgery I lost 28 pounds, just by good diet and a lot of walking. I got my BMI down to 24, and I breezed through the surgery without any problems.

This advice is SO GOOD. Walking and the rollator walker are so important!!!  I am age 64F and had CABGx4 surgery about 7.5 weeks ago. I used a rollator walker to start a regimen of 5000 steps per day on my second day home from the hospital, walking in a circuit around my house on and off all day and evening with lots of rest and napping between periods of walking. I named my walker, “Matilda,” and called my walking activity “Waltzing Matilda.” Over the intervening weeks I increased to 7K steps, then to 10K, and now 13K steps per day, eventually both inside and outdoors when the weather is nice. At some point my balance improved and I stopped needing the walker entirely. Now I can walk a whole mile without sitting to rest. And tonight I was finally able to increase my pace to a brisk 119 steps/minute and it felt SO GOOD… to the beat of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance.” I walked so much over these weeks that I wore out my favorite walking shoes and had to order replacements. I’m starting formal cardiac rehab next week and feel completely ready for the challenge. I am still somewhat sore and upper body is pretty weak, but I’m hoping that soon I will feel much better than before the surgery.

My double bypass was last Nov in Spartanburg SC. All these precautions were not told to me other than not lifting over 10 lbs. There are SO Many things I wasn’t told. Food was disgusting and definitely not a heart patient diet. Was not told to sleep on my back so I slept on my side.
