In the 70s every family generally had one tv, rich or poor.

Silly to think you were poor when you had a meal to eat, even if bologna or a cheese sandwich, had a mother who took the time to save wonder bread bags for each of her kids when the weather was bad. To me it's a way of life. Too much emphasis on being rich or poor in this country. How about just being loved or happy no matter the amount of dollars your family had???!!

Going on vacation meant visiting relatives. At grandparents, sleeping on their living room floor, sharing the space with cousins. If you got there first, you got the couch. If you got there last it was under the piano bench, avoiding the pedals. We have a joke in the family. You are rich if you can buy two pairs of shoes at a time.

I experienced a lot of this in the sixty's as well people of the 70's and 80's are not the only ones to go through this stuff.

I grew up poor in a middle class neighborhood. The neighborhood developed around our ramshackle 'house'. I don't remember it bothering me. But I'm surprised when I see these videos, that other people grew up like I did. My (divorced) mom worked so hard for us, scrimped, saved, stretched each penny. But she always had a dime for me when the popsicle truck came in the summer. She was an angel.

I still use bread bags, use old butter containers & I cannot leave a light on in a room. I never considered us or when I was growing up, but I still did most of these things. I still do.

Our needs were met, we were fed, clothed, and had a roof over our head. Money wasn't wasted on crap like it is today. Every purchase was scrutinized. We always had birthdays and holiday meals. Vacations were used to visit family or camping. There were no trips to Disneyland ever. Life was good and still is.
