I just had an idea for Alma’s generation that I wanted to throw out. What if Alma’s future husband comes from a wealthy, powerful old-money family of doctors from San Sequoia/San Francisco? He was expected to marry someone on his social level and ended up in a political marriage rather than one formed from love. And although there are warm feelings between him and his wife, he’s not sure he can call it love. Stifled by the weight of his family’s expectations, he meets Alma, who is like a breath of fresh air. She’s from Nordhaven, she doesn’t know his reputation, she doesn’t know his family, and she just knows him for who he is. So different from his "perfect" world, he can’t help but fall for her, and they begin an affair. It feels like another world to him, though a forbidden one with a line he shouldn’t have crossed. When Alma finally hosts her dinner party, perhaps because by this point she has become such a reputable doctor, (Perhaps Anders has inspired/pushed her to become the best doctor she can, so she pursues that ideal) his family pushes him to attend with his wife to "build connections" with this impressive new doctor (little do they know, he and Alma already have quite the connection...). He, having always been subject to the whims of his family, listens. He attends the party with his polished wife on his arm as Alma, the other woman, watches, heartbroken. However, Alma, already deeply in love with him, can’t just let him go. This spurs her descent onto a path of destruction. Eventually, she gets the man, but it comes with the heavy weight of his family's expectations. Alma changes. She becomes colder, striving to uphold this elite image. In this world of glamor that her child is thrown into, it’s no wonder that when her teenager becomes pregnant, the immense pressure Alma has placed on her, combined with the "shame" brought to the family, drives the teenager to run away.
