The Dominator 3 is a custom-built, heavily armored storm-chasing vehicle designed by meteorologist Reed Timmer to intercept tornadoes and deploy scientific sensors directly into them. Constructed in 2013, it utilizes a 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty with a 6.7L turbo diesel engine.Key Features and DesignArmor and Glass: Features a 3/4-inch steel shell wrapped in a Kevlar-based polyethylene material to withstand massive impacts from flying debris, along with double-paned polycarbonate windows.Aerodynamics: Includes a full base skirt to prevent wind from lifting the vehicle and a sloped, reinforced hood to direct high winds over the cabin.Tornado Intercept Mode: When positioning directly in the path of a tornado, the vehicle uses an airbag-suspension system to lower its body flush to the ground and drives heavy-duty hydraulic spikes into the earth to anchor itself.Scientific CapabilitiesThe vehicle acts as a mobile laboratory equipped to gather unprecedented data from within violent storms. Its standout capability is launching "Dorothy" probe rockets and miniature sensors directly into tornadoes from the ground up to capture 3D wind, pressure, and velocity data.Current StatusThe vehicle remains active in severe weather research. It sustained motor and hardware damage during intense intercept missions, such as the St. Libory, Nebraska tornado, but successfully underwent extensive mechanical overhauls (including an engine swap and rewiring) by specialized diesel and custom shops to continue chasing storms. For an in-depth tour of the Dominator 3 and a look at its heavy-duty features.
