I wear the Rolex Explorer II 16570 black dial that I bought new in 2002 because it is an elegant piece of jewelry that is functionally simple and not ostentatious. It feels good and looks good on my wrist and is very versatile with my wardrobe and activities. It doesn't attract undue attention to itself, having a brushed stainless steel case and bracelet with no diamonds or gold. I bought the watch for $3800 and the current price on the retail market is in the $11k to $14k range, so it has appreciated in value nicely.

Large text... I’m a watch enthusiast, and I own a few Rolexes, APs, and Omegas — and I absolutely LOVE Omega.
But I have a different theory about Rolex.
Yes, Rolex marketing is genius. Or at least, we THINK it’s genius.
Why?
Because we like to believe we’re important.
Maybe we’re doing well financially. Maybe we have enough money in the bank that we don’t have to worry about the next few months, the next few years, or maybe even the rest of our lives. So we have the luxury of wanting a Rolex.
And at the end of the day, most Rolexes cost less than a Toyota Corolla.
So what happens?
We walk into a Rolex boutique, they tell us there’s no stock, and they put our name on “the list.”
Right?
And somehow we walk out still feeling special — even though they basically treated us like shit.
Maybe people actually LIKE being treated badly.
I mean, haven’t you ever given someone a little slap on the ass during sex? And if you haven’t… you’ve probably at least thought about it.
Anyway, back to the point.
We think we’re important because maybe we have a few thousand dollars sitting around. Maybe a few hundred thousand. Maybe even a few million.
We think, “Wow, I’ve made it. I’m untouchable.”
But while we’re standing in that same Rolex boutique, somewhere else — London, New York, Dubai, Tokyo — another customer walks in.
Except that guy doesn’t have thousands.
He doesn’t have millions.
He has BILLIONS.
And here we are competing with him to buy a watch that costs somewhere between $6,000 and $50,000.
Think about that.
Like I said, people from practically every social class own cars and trucks that cost as much as, or more than, many Rolex watches.
But because we feel so damn important, we don’t think about any of this.
Instead, we think:
“Oh no! There are no Rolexes available!”
Even though Rolex produces more than a million watches a year.
So what do we do?
“I’ll just buy one on the gray market!”
And here’s where it gets even funnier.
Go look at the gray market.
There are Rolexes EVERYWHERE.
In many cases, you’ll see more Rolex inventory than Omega inventory.
But because we’re successful, important people with money to burn, we happily pay 30%, 50%, sometimes 70% ABOVE retail for the same Rolex.
Why?
Because we can!
Have we ever stopped for a second and realized how completely stupid this whole game is?
Seriously.
Ask yourself: Who really controls the gray market?
Who owns the biggest jewelry stores and dealer networks?
The guy with one or two million dollars?
Or the magnates with BILLIONS?
Who owns the massive jewelry operations in London, New York, Dubai, Japan, and everywhere else?
Think about it.
The same ultra-wealthy Rolex clients who can buy 20, 50, or 100 Rolexes have the ability to flood the gray market with Rolex inventory.
Meanwhile, the rest of us are fighting over watches, paying premiums, playing waiting-list games, and somehow convincing ourselves that WE are the important ones.
Maybe we’re not geniuses for understanding Rolex marketing.
Maybe we’re the perfect customers because we fall for it.
And the funniest part?
We keep feeling important while doing it.
Fuck Rolex.
There are incredible watches from Omega, Tudor, and yes — even TAG Heuer.
You walk into those boutiques, they actually treat you well, you can usually find what you’re looking for, and in many cases you’re getting some seriously impressive movements and watchmaking for your money.
Then someone says:
“But Omega lost its way! They make too many models!”
Okay… and?
Do you seriously want a company to keep making basically the same handful of designs for another 50 years?
Do Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci — hell, even Gap or Old Navy — sell only five shirts and five dresses for 50 years because changing anything would mean they “lost their way”?
Come on!!!
That’s another piece of marketing we’ve swallowed whole — from our glorious Rolex and from a gray market that benefits enormously from keeping the mythology alive.
And who really benefits from that market?
Well…
You already know who.
And I haven’t even said everything I could say about this.
That’s just my humble opinion.
And yes…
Today I’m wearing a Submariner.
Everybody is just tired of the Rolex, Rolex AD and GMD grifter. New release or none it doesn't matter because 99.9% of people will never get one offered to them. Yesterday there was about 8 sales personal standing around in the Rolex AD in Caesars Palace Casino. The Asian female manager there was so rude to me, I could get out of there fast enough. Rolex, ADs, and the GMDs have absolutely destroyed it's brand and market.

I don't agree that Rolly have the key to the watch world.

99 percent of people just find it annoying they can't buy one today and move off to buy some other brand that day.

I certainly would not buy a Rolly because I loathe how they act as your video describes...

It's just hard work.....

Also , people spending 10k dollars on a watch need their head testing..... unless it's an investment or gift....
You see how they fair when they first scratch it....moody for the remainder of the year...

Another issue too is that 90 percent of people will tend to belive that most Rolex they would ever see are homage copies anyhow....

I just don't get the hype..... it's just that "hype"

Your opinion is just that...merely an opinion

Left handed Sprite... because I'm left handed! I'm tired of wearing right handed watches! I'm very excited to get it! Yes, it's a silly game but it's the only decent one on the market for us (lefty's)

Rolex is to watches as DeBeer is (was) to diamonds. They both manipulated supply and demand for decades. Then lab grown diamonds destroyed DeBeer. Rolex’s market manipulation isn’t far behind. Don’t overpay for a grossly inflated Rolex or you’ll lose 50-75% when it crashes like diamonds did. It’s a Ponzi scheme.

I have a Rolex Datejust Superclone and a Rolex GMT Master II homage...Rolex is not winning. Rolex is losing hundreds of millions of dollars.
