  I was hitch hiking up to the &nbsp;Nürburgring &nbsp;for the 1965 1000 km race and got picked up by a German guy. After the race we &nbsp;met another GI in the restaurant. We decided to see if we could drive around the track in the Renault R6 (?) that the other guy had instead of in the VW we had arrived in. After several attempts and an amusing exchange with a security guard (&quot;We have 3 cases of oil we have to deliver to the Shelby team&quot; in English to the non-bilingual German guard) &nbsp;we went on our merry way around the Nordschlief receiving much applause from the campers out in the boondocks. It was a lovely day I&apos;ll never forget, a train ride, a bus ride, hitch hiking, the race, the ride around the track, a long traffic-bound ride to Darmstadt, a lovely dinner there of Veal Cordon Bleu. The German guy made sure I had enough money to get a train ride back to Mannheim but didn&apos;t know, just like me, that the last train had already left the station. I spent the whole night in the station until the first train in the morning. I never saw either of the guys again and don&apos;t even remember their names. It was my first 3-day pass in Germany.
