How the Clone Wars Unashamedly DESTROYED These Characters (And So Much Other Lore)

TCW also turned Grievous from a menacing Jedi killer into an "I'll get you next time Gadget" villain of the week.

Poor Durge and Fordo never even got an appearance.

As a fan and critic of both TCW and the Multi-Media project, thank you for keeping this discussion calm and respectful when some many others don’t.

I think George is also partially to blame since he oversaw some of these decisions.

Much like George Lucas, Dave is at his best when working with other writers who help develop his ideas and reign in his worse impulses. If you really love Clone Wars, you should also be thanking Henry Gilroy, Drew Z. Greenberg, Steven Melching, and Katie Lucas and not just giving all the credit to Dave Filoni.

The thing that always annoyed me about TCW was that it wanted to have its cake and eat it too. It kept referencing different existing media/stories in the EU, yet were rewriting them instead of around them

They should've brought Depa falling to the Dark Side over into canon, and also kept her as Kanan's Master. Imagine if when Ezra starts flirting with the Dark Side, Kanan sees the signs and does everything he can to stop it because he's been through this before.

So the book in 4th grade that really got me into reading was The Courtship of Princess Leia, and it's brutal how much The Clone Wars just ignores the history of Dathomir.

So many of the changes could have easily been avoided. Use a different name for whatever planet, or create use a different race of Jedi that hasn't been used before, instead of stealing a name because you are too lazy to use a new one.

I think that the dumbest part of TCW was the Mandalorian Corruption Arc where Asoka uses a technology that allows her to "See the face of someone underneath a hood". I think that this is absolutely dumb because it just makes you wonder... Where would "looking at someone hiding under a hood" be useful? I mean, it's not like the Darth Lord of the Sith is constantly hiding his identity underneath a hood or something like that.

As someone who did grow up with many Clone Wars EU media, I didn’t mind TCW’s existence or the fact that Dave Filoni was behind it, but in hindsight, I definitely think Filoni should’ve had Ahsoka die in Rebels so that her Character Arc could wrap up nicely.

One of the RPG source books (I forget which one) subtly hints that the entire show is an in-universe holodrama which not only takes creative liberties, but also draws on available historical sources, which largely consist of COMPNOR propaganda. It's somebody trying to put the pieces back together using available information decades later. This easily fixes all the discrepancies (with the possible exception of Mandalore).

There are hints that Dave Filoni himself always intended for the show to be a holoseries. When the first season was re-aired on Cartoon Network leading up to the premiere of the second season, it was hosted by C-3PO and R2-D2, who provided commentary in the form of pop-up balloons. The first episode had a pop-up that said something along the lines of, "Look, Artoo! It's another old holovid of our adventures." I distinctly remember seeing it.

This solves the continuity problems for me. What we're watching is in-universe historical fiction.
