Il a dansé pour Staline avant de détruire sa statue | Nikita Khrouchtchev

Nikita Khrushchev is one of the most contradictory figures of the twentieth century. The son of a peasant, born in a dacha on the Russian plains, a fitter in the Donbas mines, he never earned a single degree, yet he rose to the head of the world's second-largest economy. This biographical documentary retraces his entire journey, from the village of Kalinovka to the guarded dacha where he secretly dictated his memoirs. We follow, step by step, the stages of an extraordinary life: his childhood in a poor peasant family and his apprenticeship as a fitter in Yuzovka, the industrial city founded by a Welsh entrepreneur; the 1917 revolution, the Civil War, and his years as a political commissar in the Red Army; his methodical ascent within the party apparatus; the Moscow Industrial Academy; the construction of the metro; and the conquest of the capital. The film tackles head-on the darkest chapters of this biography: Stalin's active participation in the Great Terror from 1936 to 1938, the lists of condemned men signed in Moscow and then in Ukraine, and the belated confession of a man who declared he had blood up to his elbows. Then came the war, with the kyiv catastrophe, the failed offensives at Kharkov, Stalingrad, and Kursk, and the death in combat of his eldest son. The second part of the documentary focuses on his years in power: Stalin's death and the struggle for succession, Beria's arrest, and the secret report of February 25, 1956, which shook the communist world. It also covers the Thaw, the release of millions of political prisoners, the first individual housing projects, the launch of the first artificial satellite, and Yuri Gagarin's flight. Then came the most perilous aspect of his reign: the Berlin ultimatum, the downed reconnaissance plane incident, the interrupted Paris Peace Conference, the tumultuous United Nations session, the break with Beijing, the construction of the Berlin Wall, and the Cuban Missile Crisis—thirteen days during which the world teetered on the brink of nuclear war. The narrative concludes with the fall of October 1964, the silent retreat, the clandestine recording of his memoirs, and a death almost ignored by the press in his own country, before exploring the lasting legacy this man left to the generation that would reform the system some thirty years later. The contested episodes of this history are presented with their various interpretations, without a definitive verdict, in accordance with the rigorous documentary standards that guide this channel. This film is for anyone who wants to understand the twentieth century beyond archival footage and ready-made formulas. Written and narrated by: Étienne Beaumont. Channel: Stories of Legends.
