Can Pip Build Like a Beaver? | Animals and Their Homes for Kids

Pip wants to make a pond, just like a beaver! First, a pile of sticks - the water squeezes right through the gaps. Then Skye's idea, just mud - it washes away and turns the stream brown. Finally, the very same sticks with mud packed into the gaps: a real pond! Along the way we find out that animals change the place where they live to get what they need: a beaver needs deep water, so it builds a dam of sticks and mud across a stream, and the dam holds the water back into a pond. We look at real beaver dams and ponds, and then sing Stick, Stick, Mud. For ages 4 to 6, best watched together. Pip stops talking four times so you can ask a question and let your child guess: 1:17 Will a pile of sticks hold back the water? What do you think will happen? 2:09 Will just mud hold back the water? Why do you think so? 3:15 Sticks with mud packed in the gaps: will it make a pond? 4:17 Why would a beaver want deep water? Safety: a grown-up stays for all the water play, and empties the tray after. Keep sticks out of mouths, and wash hands after playing with mud. Real beavers are wild animals; watch them only from a distance, in real life or on video. Try it at home: prop one end of a baking tray on a book to make a slope, and pour a cup of water in at the top to make a stream. Build a dam across the middle three ways: sticks only, mud only, then the same sticks again with mud packed into the gaps. Pour the same cup each time. Which one makes a pond behind it? Draw what you see. What's real: the beaver pond, the beaver dam and the muddy stream are real video. Pip, Skye, the model stream, and the beaver, its teeth and its lodge are drawings, and the beaver drawings say "Drawing" on screen. Pip's and Skye's voices and the song were made by a computer.
