The food from my school cafeteria I would genuinely pay real money to eat one more time is the peanut butter bar. Our lunch ladies at my elementary school in Indiana baked them in enormous sheet pans, and you could smell them from the hallway by second period, and the entire school's mood visibly improved on peanut butter bar day. I have tried at least six copycat recipes over the years, and every single one is close — but not it.

The one I still refuse to forgive is the green beans. Fifty years later. Olive-drab, steam-tray green beans that had been cooking since dawn. I ate around them for six straight years and I regret nothing.

And a genuine thank you, all these years later, to Mrs. Delores, who ran our cafeteria line and knew every kid's name in a school of four hundred. She slipped an extra roll onto my tray more times than she was supposed to, and I never forgot it.

So tell me. Two things. The cafeteria food you would genuinely eat again right now if someone put it in front of you. And the one you still refuse to forgive. Both. I read every single one.

👇

Pizza was my favorite. I went to elementary school in the 70s. We had Junior Girl Scout meetings in the cafeteria.

Loved the chocolate ice cream cups but hated the flat wooden spoon that almost always gave you a splinter in your tongue!

We had lunch ladies that came around with a tray with white bread fold overs of butter or grape jelly or peanut butter (all war surplus) and the peanut butter was gritty

Pizza & Fries Fridays were my favorite in High School. My least favorite was the veggies that had a waxy texture.

Square pizza was the BOMB even until the early 1980's. And THEN...Double pizza Friday's!! I used to pay for extra food! Lol. .50 could get you an extra sloppy joe!

Johnny Marzetti was a good lunch! Although it wasn’t listed as such on my school menu...but rather pasta with meat sauce...or something like that. As for the milk cartons, I remember in my very early (and I do mean EARLY) days of elementary school, we had "square" cartons with a strip of foil on one corner. You peeled off the foil then popped up the corner of the carton to drink it. Also loved pizza days and beef veggie soups with p-nut butter/honey sandwiches, a few saltines, and a sweet type cake of some sort. Those were the days of academia for sure. And yes...on occasion those dearly beloved lunch ladies would announce "free leftovers first come first serve" depending on the choice delicacy of the day. 😊

My favorite meal was little smokies, with a side of buttere mashed potatoes. This was in the '60s, before little smokies became more of an appetizer.

The trays I remember were metal.
