I am a Dutchman living in Switzerland. The two points on which Haarlem has an advantage over Utrecht in my opinion are: it is slightly closer to Amsterdam and, to my taste, the biggest advantage is that it is much closer to the sea. However, Haarlem is a much smaller city with far less atmosphere than Utrecht. I think Leiden or Delft are more comparable to Haarlem in that respect, and they are also located in the Randstad. Utrecht really has many more restaurants, cafés, theaters, concerts, etc., and is much more international. But... after Amsterdam, Utrecht is also the most expensive city to live in.

I moved from Australia to Gouda 10 yrs ago. I had lived in Amsterdam for 6 yrs a few years ago. I love my choice, it has a beautiful old city centre with canals and stunning old buildings, where I bought a house. When I go out I only speak Dutch but when amongst Dutch friends I find that they really like to speak English. People here are great, very friendly and your neighbours will always help you whenever you need it.

I lived in the Netherlands for one year in the 1980s, mainly in Leiden. I've been back a couple of times to stay in the Utrecht area, Haarlem, and Leiden. Things have changed a lot since I lived there but I could definitely see myself moving there again. I would not choose Amsterdam, however, the smaller cities and villages are much more livable in my opinion.

Don't make this too difficult for yourself. I am Dutch and have lived in many places in the Netherlands, you can always move to another location, there is not something silly like a "forever home".
The biggest problem is getting into the housing market in the first place, from that you can grow to something bigger and or better or move to another location.

We were looking in the past for a place in the Netherlands and we have decided for Haarlem and we don't regret it. It is small enough that it is not so crowded and noisy and you can easily get around and big enough that everything is here - schools, shops, doctors, activities for kids and so on. Great location close to the dunes, the see, Amsterdam and the airport, good access to highways, many train connections.

The mechanical ventilation is meant to make sure warm moist air is extracted so you don't get moisture problems. They only extract air.

I lived in Belgium near Netherlands , my ex was from there , moved from Florida … girl, the winters are brutal, I was sick all the time … but back then drs made house calls, wonder if they still do. I liked both Netherlands and flanders area of Belgium which has lot of similarities, the food, the architecture , the lifestyle was really great. But the weather is depressing . It didn’t snow when I was there , it’s bone chilling wet cold and wind storms that had roof tiles flying off our house. They compensate with what I’d call Cozy Culture . Ideally I’d live there 4-5 months a year and somewhere warmer the rest. Good luck!

As a Dutch person i welcome you very much to our small country.
Good luck in finding a location you like. And when you are settled here i would advice you also to check the villages outside the Randstad. For example Nijmegen ( oldest city in the Netherlands ), Amersfoort, Maastricht, Breda, Groningen, Dordrecht, Arnhem. But also smaller villages like Barneveld, Oosterbeek when the airborne walking tour is around september ( airborne walking tour started just after the 2nd worldwar as a memorial for the 2nd worldwar, many military veterans that fought to liberate the Netherlands were walking this tour as well in the end they were watching ( unfortante most are not living anymore ) but still many people joining to walk this every year. If you walk this tour you can choose a distance between 10 km, 15 km, 25 km and 40 km. If you finished it you will get an Airborne medal, next to visit is Giethoorn ( best is around april and may ). Maybe it is also an idea to visit other American influencers in the Netherlands and make a video together.

Make sure you visit in November through February when you'll doubt ever going there in the first place ;~)

Have you ever considered looking for the smaller cities and villages around the main cities you already visited? My wife for example works in Amsterdam but we live in a smaller city about 6 miles above Amsterdam called Purmerend. Public transportation wil take about 15 to 20 minutes to get to Amsterdam Central Station but most importantly you can actually get an affordable and larger house with a car so you are not tied to a place like Amsterdam because getting an affordable house with a car is nearly impossible in Amsterdam or even some of the other cities you visited.
