Wilmer McLean, who had farmed at Manassas Junction in 1861 - left his farm after the first battle to settle with his wife's family at Appomattox - so he could honestly say the US Civil War started in his back yard and ended in his front room!

The terms of surrender were very gracious. It's humbling to think of it, really. I'm not sure I could have brought myself to be so gracious in victory considering how bloody the war was.

Their generals fought flashy battles rather than thinking strategically, when they had neither the manpower or war material to do so.
