  This is so good. I need to learn that presentation by heart….Praying for the dead is charity necessary as Christians. If you want to be prayed for when you die. Give that charity to those who are in desperate need now.

  I wonder if purgatory could be related to ritual purification or even circumcision? A ritual washing imitating purgatorial purification and circumcision outwardly represents a circumcised heart fully divinised by divine love experienced in heaven.

  Notice when bad motives are judged, which are venial sins. Is it when we die? It says, &quot;Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God&quot; (1 cor. 4). Please explain.

  I could be completely wrong, but my understanding of the passage in Maccabees is that it doesn’t necessarily present prayer for the dead as something explicitly commanded by God. It seems more like the people were acting out of hope and faith for their fallen brothers, especially since those who died were found with pagan idols. Their prayers appear to be more of a hopeful appeal to God rather than a clear doctrinal instruction.<br><br>Regarding purgatory, I may be misunderstanding, but I’ve always thought of it more in the context of the Old Testament. Before Christ, it makes sense that there would be some kind of holding place, since access to heaven wasn’t opened until Jesus’ death and resurrection, which aligns with ideas like Sheol.<br><br>What I struggle with is the idea of purgatory after Christ. If God fully forgives sins through grace when someone truly repents, it’s hard for me to understand why there would still be a need for further purification. I understand the argument about the effects of sin remaining, but it raises questions about how that fits with complete forgiveness.<br><br>I’ve been Protestant my whole life and have spent the last couple of years studying biblical history more deeply. Recently, I’ve started seriously looking into Catholicism, so I’m still working through these questions. I’m not trying to argue, just genuinely trying to understand how purgatory fits into the picture after the New Testament.
