At 55 years old, I was diagnosed with arthritis and a torn meniscus. I was a TKR candidate. While waiting for surgery to be scheduled, I gave exercise one last try. I started cycling, watched my diet, and added weightlifting twice a week. 12 years later, I'm 30 pounds lighter, and my knee is almost pain-free. No TKR needed, and I was even able to return to running at age 65. Choosing the 'exercise option' is the best thing I ever did. Added bonus: Zero prescription drugs at age 67.

"Motion is lotion." The physical therapist who did my post-knee replacement said that to me. LOL

I considered knee replacement at 75, but decided to exercise, stopped drinking, and changed my diet. My knees are fine now that I am 80. I listened to your advice from an earlier video. Thank you.

I had very severe pain and I went to physical therapy for several months. Finally I went to an orthopedic surgeon and he ordered an MRI. I had bone on bone arthritis, a torn meniscus and a crack in my femur. I had the replacement surgery and am doing very well. I'm glad I had it.

I’m 76 - have had knee arthritis since 50’s. Did all the things you mentioned to get to 70’s. Then my left knee became bone in bone on the lateral side. After increasing the frequency of injections, basically nothing worked. I scheduled TKR surgery 6 months out and used an off loading brace (custom fit by my doctor- paid for by Medicare) to increase my normal workout routine to focus on ROM and quad / hamstring/ calf muscle strengthening. Had surgery in December and I was surfing and working out hard again in 6 months. Metal knee is far from “normal” but I can walk, climb stairs, do whatever I want without flames going up and down my knee.

I was a contact floor layer for 40 years . Retired early because my knees don’t want to touch the floor anymore. My ankles and toes aren’t much better . Unless you’ve been there you can’t imagine the pain .

I don't "kinda not want knee replacement." I DEFINITELY don't want it! Thanks for repeating things to help avoid this surgery.

Great discussion with lots of good suggestions but you didn’t mention how humor can help decrease pain— I always feel better listening to your back and forth banter!😊

My son is an ortho surgeon in Vancouver Canada. He tells patients to lose weight ( if necessary) and go on a zero resistance bike for six months. Countless avoid surgery this way.

I had hyaluronic acid injections (gel injections) in my knees in 2024 and had good relief from pain for a good 15-16 months. No additional treatment of any kind (they mentioned anti-inflammatories and ohysical therapy). I'm going in for another round soon. May not work for everyone, but I'm grateful to have the option.
