    1968. &nbsp;One of these was in the showroom of the Porsche dealer in Goettingen .<br>&quot;You can&apos;t make a pig into a thoroughbred. &nbsp;But if you have enough money you can make a damn fast pig.&quot;

    I must compliment this channel in that for a non Porsche dedicated channel you have nailed the details perfectly and without all the silly mistakes that other channels get concerning Porsche history or the 917 history. It’s almost like you went through the Porsche book: ‘Excellence was Expected’. 😉

    Not one mention of Professor Norbert Singer. THE engineer at Porsche Racing.

    It&apos;s ridiculous to assert that Elford &quot;forgot every word&quot; of Bott&apos;s instructions at Le Mans in 1969. &nbsp;Elford planned all along to drive at a slower, more careful pace than Stommelen. &nbsp;Elford (driving with Attwood) felt he could easily win the race if the car held together. &nbsp;Moveable aero elements were not removed by JWAE. &nbsp;The FIA outlawed the movable devices prior to Le Mans 1969 (Porsche was given special permission to use the movable flaps for Le Mans when Porsche threatened to withdraw all of their cars). At Sebring in 1970, the 917s did not &apos;overheat&apos;. &nbsp;The new designed for the wheel hubs failed repeatedly and that caused Porsche to lose the race. &nbsp;It also incorrect to suggest that Rodriguez drove &apos;too fast&apos; in 24-hour races. &nbsp;Simply not true. &nbsp;In 1970, a connecting rod broke in his engine due to a manufacturing defect. &nbsp;In 1971, his 917 again had a mechanical failure when the oil hose broke in the cockpit. &nbsp;Regarding the Can-Am, only one magnesium-alloy frame car was raced and it only raced once before Mark Donohue crashed in it during a test at Road Atlanta in 1972. &nbsp;Also, Follmer did not have to wait for the seventh race in 1972 to win. &nbsp;He won the second race, then the fourth and fifth, Donohue won the seventh and Follmer won the eighth and ninth races. &nbsp;In 1973, Donohue did not win at the first <s>two</s> races. &nbsp;He did win the final six with the 917/30. &nbsp;Finally, it should be noted that Ferdinand Piech left the day-to-day work at Porsche well before the end of the 917&apos;s success in Can-Am and the closed-course record.

    Thanks for you detailed documentation! I just got a 1/18 917K Salzburg livery model car because of this video. It stays proudly besides my McLaren MP4/4 and Ferrari F2004.

    The P917 essentially killed the 5-liter sports car series. And the P917/10 &amp; P917/30 killed CanAn. <br>The Can Am rules were spare - 4 wheels and if I recall correctly, room for a driver &amp; passenger.

    The 917 is so freaking awesome but the 961 always holds a special place in my heart, growing up my dad was a big air cooled guy and man did it pay off later in life cause nobody works on em now. Just seeing what they did with limited technology is truly awesome.
