  Nice job, guys! This conversation was a good summary of the evidence on the Kinderhook plates, and what the episode means. <br><br>Joseph&apos;s response to the Kinderhook plates definitely provides evidence that he believed there really were ancient engraved records that could be found in the Americas.<br><br>The &quot;Gentile&quot; who saw Joseph Smith compare the Kinderhook characters with those on the GAEL was Judge Sylvester Emmons.<br><br>Some people confuse the research Mark and I did on this with deliberate apologetics. While there&apos;s absolute nothing wrong with intentionally defending faith - to the contrary! - that wasn&apos;t our goal. Our goal was to figure out how Joseph Smith derived the content he had reportedly translated from the Kinderhook plates. Given that this entire content is explained by Joseph Smith comparing a single character from the Kinderhook plates with a single character from the GAEL - documents we have an <b>eyewitness</b> tell us he compared - I think it&apos;s an open and shut case. Certainly no one who rejects this explanation has offered any better explanation, or, more accurately, any explanation at all.

  I can relate to this explanation. Long time ago when I was serving on my mission I obtained a copy of the Book of Mormon in Mandarin Chinese. I was really interested in the characters. So I started comparing the Mandarin text to its source, the English Book of Mormon, and I was able to figure out the characters for the personal pronoun &quot;I&quot;, the words &quot;father&quot; and &quot;parents&quot; and a few others. It sounds like Joseph was trying to compare characters on the Kinderhook plates with the puzzled-out Egyptian characters that he thought represented his divinely-received translation of the papyri.

  The REAL HOAX is how critics of Joseph and the Church have spun this into a lie that Joseph was deceived. &nbsp;And they have used this lie to deceive unwary and unlearned individuals in the Church to leave; and out of the Church to mock and scorn. &nbsp;The same type of critics who would have changed the lost 116 pages to contradict any re-translation. &nbsp;Like the Sanhedrin who told the Roman guards to lie about the angel they saw at the tomb.

  Even non-members in the area noted Joseph never made a translation. &nbsp;He did compare a character to one in the Egyptian Grammar, noted a possibility, then never did anything more with the Kinderhook plates. &nbsp;The fellow in the 1860s who noted they were a hoax to trap Joseph did not note a translation either. &nbsp;Had he done so, the antichrists and their dupes would have been hooting and hollering.

  What doesn’t make senses is if Joseph knew he was a fraud then he would know these would be frauds too. Knowing that it makes more sense to call them out as frauds or from satan than to entertain it in the slightest. Criterion of embarrassment seems to fit here

  I love that Joseph didn&apos;t automatically jump to &quot;they must be forgeries.&quot; He had a pure heart &amp; didn&apos;t think of others as crooks because he wasn&apos;t a crook!
