I’ve never had this problem because I worked in Retail for years in the beginning of my life, so that taught me to “merchandise” my closets at home. But I’ll share with you some tips that I learned that help with keeping yourself in check:

1. Split your wardrobe up. Group all Spring/Summer together, then all Fall/Winter. Then separate all outerwear (coats, vests, thick cardigans), and all evening or special occasion wear.

2. Choose 4 separate closets in your house. Keep only in season items in your bedroom closet; rotate it each season. Keep out of season in another closet (or on a rack in the basement, garage or in large storage container, stacked out of the way somewhere). If you choose the rack option, invest in a full rack, zip closure, cover to keep your clothes dust free). Put your outerwear in the hall closet nearest the front door. Put your evening wear in the 4th closet….note, if you have young children, take half their hanging space for your evening wear. Put the majority of your children’s clothes in a dresser and/or an armoire.

3. Organize each closet by color. All whites together, all pink, all blue, all black, etc. Organize colors light to dark. Start with white on the far right and end with black on the far left. Within each color group, organize sleeve lengths; tanks first, then short sleeves, then long sleeves last. Repeat the process in each color section.

4. Get rid of plastic or wire hangers. Unify your hangers to one color and preferably use felt-nonslip ones. Do not hang jeans or joggers or sweat pants. Roll those and keep them in a drawer (also separated by season and also lined up within the drawer by color).

5. PURGE. Pull out of your wardrobe anything that you did not wear from the previous season and donate it, regardless of what it is, what color, what size, etc. If you didn’t wear it last Spring, you won’t wear it this Spring, so get rid of it. Doing so makes room for new stuff that you will wear! Be quick & unmerciful about it. Don’t think about it, just quickly yank & toss!

Once you complete these 5 steps, it should result in more space and a much more organized, easy to operate system. Then, the final step for keeping it this way is:

6. If you buy something new, then something old needs to go. So when you’re at the store considering it, ask yourself what you’re willing to let go of in order to have the new piece.

GOOD LUCK

Instead of consignment stores I take my good clothes to a center that helps battered women dress for a job. Now that makes a huge impact on helping other women.

The moment I bring home an new item of wool, silk, cashmere, mohair etc., I pop it in a ziplock bag and stick it in my garage freezer for several days to kill all the moths, larvae and eggs. Once they come into the house I store them in sealed bags or containers when I'm not wearing them. For wool fabric and rugs, steam clean every inch of it as high heat also kills them.

What I have learned about 'piles of PAPER'.
Paper was a living being and holds memory.
Each paper has an emotional impact/memory/charge - some great, some awful ... it's NOT the piles of paper we avoid - we avoid the emotions, the memories attached to the paper and what they represented in our lives that we have to process/relive as we sort the paper. We avoid the DECISION of what to do with the paper.
THIS is why sorting piles of paperwork can be so exhausting, but, it must be done.
Shred the hell out of what you no longer need, organize the rest, and do not allow paper piles to get out-of-hand again.

No judgement.

Maybe you were ill, worked 80 hrs. A week, worked and went to school.

It DOESN'T MATTER.

If you can set up a long folding table(s) and just start sorting. You will most likely discard 50% right away.
DO NOT SORT on your desk, dining room table, counter etc. If you don't finish the piles of paper will return criss-crossed, partially finished back into the box/container. Set up the table where you can leave it until you are finished.

I wish you - whoever you are - the best of luck!

MOTHS - My understanding is the moths lay eggs and the larvae damage the cloth - not the moth.
❤❤❤Janelle❤❤❤

One thing that stands out to me in your closet are your pants. When I had my first California Closet designed and installed, I told my designer I wanted space long enough for my pants to hang without folding. She looked at me like I had two heads and said I’ve never done that before and you’re the first person to ever ask me. We’re two smart women!

Rebecca, I have had 8bags of clothes in my car since November that don’t fit me anymore. I’m the one who you replied to in your live session who lost 80 pounds. I lost mot of the weight more than two years ago and hung onto my clothes ‘just in case’. I decided last year they had to go and finally got them out of the closet into the car in November but then had trouble making the final step of letting them go.

This morning after Pilates I finally dropped them off at a clothing bin.

I had to resist the urge to go through them one last time. I, like you, thought about the money I had spent on them but realistically, two of me could have fit into some of them.

I still have my “good clothes” Armani suits etc, which I am going to take to a tailor but the freedom I felt when I looked in the back seat of my car and it was empty was exhilarating.

And I came to youtube this afternoon to see your closet redo. Can’t wait to watch!

Not only do we learn so much from you, you inspire us and you also entertain the hell out of me lol
Closet looks fantastic! Love that dresser and the counter top on it with the lamps, beautiful! We live how we think, so when your mind's right, your environment gets right and the vice versa. Our closets are the deepest part of our homes and most important essentials, when we make it beautiful and clean, we reform what we feel about ourselves and how we start the day! Great job!
And girl.. YESSSS you Have to sell those clothes, you spent the money, make some back and use it for the items you need or want later in your size.
