  5 Haitian Gourdes used to be exchanged for 1 US dollar when I was a kid in the early 1990s. So when tourists and diaspora come to Haiti, and I remember when dad used to come from the US with dollars, you can use US dollars instead of exchanging it, you just give 1 dollar for 5 gourdes. That's why we called 5 gourdes a dollar. Overtime, the Haitian Gourde lost its value, but people still refer to 5 gourdes as a dollar, though they call it Haitian dollar since it no longer equals to a US dollar.
