  CASE CLOSED: For the first time in the 3+ years this channel has been creating videos, one of the cases covered on The Crime Portal has officially been closed.<br><br>On the night of 22 January 2005, 35-year-old Jennifer Kiely was found dead by the fire service in a shelter on the seafront at Holywell, Eastbourne. She had suffered multiple stab wounds, a blow to the head, and her body had been set alight. A pushchair belonging to her was found placed on top of her body — investigators at the time judged the attack likely to have been sexually motivated. <br><br>In the immediate aftermath, two men were arrested. But despite forensic teams recovering DNA from a discarded cigarette butt and from biological traces on the victim’s body (including blood), the male DNA profile did not match anyone on the national database — and with no obvious match, the case went cold. <br><br>Years later, advances in forensic science offered new hope. From 2018 onward, investigators adopted a familial DNA strategy — a technique that allows police to trace potential relatives of an unknown suspect from DNA evidence. This renewed effort gradually narrowed down possibilities until, in summer 2024, a sample from a man in northern England produced a match. That match allowed police to formally identify Keith Dowbekin (also known by the aliases Keith Black and Keith Broadbent) as the main suspect. <br><br>Dowbekin died in 2014, aged 60 — long before being named in connection with the case. Despite his death, authorities described the DNA evidence as “overwhelming,” and concluded there was no one else they were seeking in connection with the murder. <br><br>For Jennifer’s family, the naming of a suspect has offered a measure of closure after two decades of uncertainty. They have remembered her as a gentle, creative, and caring person, grieving not just the crime but the loss of someone beloved. At the same time, they have called for greater compassion for people experiencing homelessness or mental-health difficulties — echoing concerns that resonated throughout Jennifer’s life.
