"The death of the author" is a term originated by the French intellectual Roland Barthes. What he meant was that the author did not determine the meaning of a text, instead the meaning of a text lay with its readers. So the death of the author stems from the birth of the reader.

Wow this guy has one of the most intellectual and level headed commentary on some the biggest societal topics of today… I wonder what his thoughts on his vegetable soup are.

"The Death of the Author" is not an exoneration of shitty behaviour.
It was a metaphor employed for describing a trend in literary philosophy at the time of Bartes, wherein works of art were as determined as much by the reader as by the writer - it is a negation of the notion that the author alone can lay claim to their texts.

I am 50 and work retail. I have sensory processing issues. I can miss details that many take for granted. I am blind in one eye and it takes a lot more effort to input and output information. It's never an excuse. If I do miss something, I ask co workers and friends to just tell me.

I missed that a coworker is trans. I was embarrassed when a Supe told me and that Supe figured I was not trying to be malicious. I told my Supe that it takes no effort to be kind. I don't grasp fully what is in "her mind." But I do have Cerebral Palsy and grasp how others harass because of something that inborn within me.

I figure that right now for trans folks is like being gay in The 80's. General hatred and more. My idea is what matters is don't be a jerk and I am cool with you. Live life in the way you see fit.

For an unedited, straight through format, you are remarkably fluid and concise, Adam. Really wonderfully presented thoughts and thank you for being forward with your thoughts.
Its really disappointing how readily folks in the public eye avoid complex social issues. I dont think that means people in the public eye should comment on everything, that can actually be harmful BUT it means they should at the very least evolve with the changing zeitgeist and show an open, honest and receptive disposition. Its a fine line between inserting yourself in a conversation that doesnt require your input and being quietly complicit via your passivity and lack of engagement.

On the relationships with subordinates - I think I've seen the use of the specific term "command rape" used in the context of the military - the idea that the direct power disparity between the two parties (a commander and their direct subordinate) is so great and so absolute that it is considered impossible for the subordinate to provide informed consent because of the power the commander has over the subordinate's career, health, well-being, and life in general.

Just wanted to say I appreciate you talking about the mistakes you've made. It will turn some people away, perhaps, but I only recently discovered this channel and I have to say that it endears me to you all the more.

I, too, have done and said things before that I look back on with disdain and feel guilt for. But life is about growing and I'm glad that you made it a point to highlight some of your own failings. It takes the discussion outside the realm of the hypothetical and into your own experience.

I'm a better person today than I was back then, and hopefully I'll be better still tomorrow.

1:03:35 spoke to me. I only had a relationship end where I really felt like I was falling in love for the first time pretty recently, and it didn't work out. Hearing someone say that's not a feeling tied to just one person and is just what love feels like is very comforting to hear right now. Thank you.
