I was really impressed with the Pastor's question in the first place- "How do we misunderstand it?"

It is really nice to see an intelligent conversation between Catholics and Protestants that is not contentious.

As a protestant-leaning catholic I can finally agree with the Church's teaching on Purgatory as a process of final sanctification. That is in my opinion fully admissible by Biblical standards.

I really enjoy these kind of conversations between protestants and catholics much more than the "who got the sickest burn" type of convos. Well done brothers in Christ! 🎉

Holy Scripture teaches we shall each be held accountable for every careless word we have uttered and shall each be judged as we have judged others and we shall each be liable to judgment if angry with others and we shall each receive recompense for BOTH the good AND THE BAD we have done in the body, as we must all strive for that holiness without which no one shall see the Lord! Brant Pitre is still the best theologian on purgatory. There are so many biblical passages which explain the doctrine of purgatory and mortal vs venial sin -- especially Jesus's parables having to do with judgement and salvation of the elect. Jesus makes it clear that some will be saved but will face tremendous (physical) punishment.

They was a helpful bit about how the Council of Trent was part of Catholicism's own reform efforts and what kind of things were adresses. As a protestant myself, I was under the impression that the Catholic Church categorically rejected all the arguments of the protestant reformation and refused to acknowledge that any problems existed. I also thought that Trents laugh when asked about financial indulgences had a lot behind it!
