Recording a boom and a lav at the same time is good, but I would not recommend playing both mics at the same time. This makes the audio messy with phase issues. A good rule of thumb when mixing is to choose one source or the other. If you decide to use the lav mic, try toggling to the boom mic whenever the subject isn’t speaking. Foley and footsteps sound unnatural on a lav mic, so you want to use the boom audio for the areas where people are just walking around and not speaking. When they start talking, then switch to the lav mic in those spots if the boom isn’t good enough. Record room tone with your boom and add room tone just to the spots where you use the lav mic to make the ambience match. Sometimes you have to cheat a little, but as a general rule of thumb, always use one source or the other. Never both at the same time. Also, shotgun microphones should only be used outdoors or in rooms that have no reflections (echo). Shotgun mics can sound really bad in an area like a kitchen. For indoor dialog, a short cardiod condenser will work a lot better. The Samson CO2 is a good mic that works well indoors and much more budget friendly than the industry standard Sennheiser MKH-50. You just have to be more careful with the Samson because it’s more sensitive to handling noise because it’s cheap. But if you can control the handling noise, it can get a very professional sounding result.
