I think an underdiscussed factor in why many young fighters feel so blase about CTE is that most of the examples used in discussing the dangers of it use famous, legendary figures like Muhammad Ali. So when these young fighters are weighing whether its "worth it", theyre subconsciously relating CTE with these legendary careers and subsequent glory. So it becomes a lot easier to justify taking that risk.

Nobody talks about the forgotten fighters, the amateurs, the underdogs, the up-and-comers who get their futures destroyed with nothing to show for it.

I’m a nurse’s assistant, I work with people with severe dementia every day. I don’t care how ambitious you are, you do not want that future.

Weight cuts and the dehydration that is involved with that, increases brain damage when knock outs happen because a dehydrated brain moves in the skull more and the trauma is so much more severe.

Boxers fighting 40+ rounds back in the day is absolutely horrifying, let alone how often they fought

Every time you see Dana sit sitting on a casino playing $100k hands off Blackjack, just remember who paid the cost for him to sit there.

The other thing everyone leaves out is that frontal lobe damage (like say, getting hit in the front or back of the head because you were facing the person who punched you) causes loss of critical thinking, increased aggression, loss of impulse control, and loss of a sense of self. So the very injuries they sustain are removing the brain development that would give them the ability to comprehend the damage they're taking.

The same damage they are taking makes them too impulsive, unfocused, and emotionally aggressive to manage in an office job or to hold down consistent trade work.

Since this is literally the first and most common damage that they receive it really does mean that by the time they get into their first professional fight the very brain damage they took too get that good makes it impossible for them to do anything else.

Also: this damage is the kind most often found in serial killers, stalkers, and domestic violence perpetrators. So it's really a self fulfilling prophecy.

I was studying neuropscych in 2010 and my professor told me, "If you like MMA, that's great... there is going to be a lot of opportunity for neuropsychologists and neurosurgeons to in that space in the future."

It's frightening how often chasing a dream ends with you catching a nightmare.

Steve Thompson, England rugby union player, can’t remember winning the World Cup 20 years ago. He’s 42, diagnosed with early onset dementia.

I started boxing, but this quickly stopped me from ever fighting. I was sparring with my trainer, he got me in the head, which gave me a headache for days and I was like "No CTE. Thanks." I want to be a surgeon, and the shakes sure as hell don't look good on a surgeon.
