I knew Horowitz was good. But this BLEW my expectations.

As an amateur pianist, what always impresses me the most about Horowitz is how utterly, 100% relaxed he is at every single point, no matter the tempo or dynamics; it's incredible.  He just kind of softly lays his big mitts on top of the keys and all the notes come out.

I saw Horowitz play the Chopin heroic polonaise back in 1975 as an encore in Chicago. It was one of the many he played after concluding the concert with Liszt's Mephisto Waltz. I had gotten real lucky and got on-stage tickets. When through and joined in the standing ovation, the lady next to me refused to stand...when I asked her why, she said "he plays it much better at home." I'll never forget that day...

I was given tickets to Vladamir Horowitz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  I did not know what was in store for me.  I saw this tiny bent over man shuffle towards the piano and imagined I was in for a long boring evening.  From the minute his fingers touched the keys, I was teleported right out of that concert hall into realms I'd never experienced.  I could have listened to him all night and all the next day.  It was as if he wrote the music himself.  The next day, the Washington Post, wrote a long article about all the notes he missed, completely missing the whole point of his concert.  I am so grateful that I got to hear him play live.  The best musical performance I ever witnessed.

Rachmaninov commented that Horowitz found things in his music that he didn't know he'd put there.

Many performers havn't realised that to play a conposers music they have to create it again in that moment. Thanks for pointing out why he is the best.

I'm just a self-taught pianist by ear...years ago after Horowitz passed his wife gave his piano back to Steinway and they allowed it  to travel around the country allowing people to play on it. It came to my town and I was able to play it for a few minutes. I can tell you the touch was incredibly light, especially in the high register. It felt almost fragile like you should not play it hard. I did try to get expression out of it and it responded very well. But the thing the piano left for me as an impression was its condition. It had many scratches and dents all over it from its travels world wide, but the piano was pristine on the inside. It occurred to me the piano was like man, rough and aged on the outside but still young on the inside. I alway feel that Horowitz was like a kid full of wonder of the music. He never let his music go stale or boring he played like it gave great joy.

Thank you sir for this. My late Dad was such a Horowitz fan. When he died at 87 and  we collected his car and I ejected the cassette from the stereo - it was none other than Horowitz. Dad would have subscribed. :)

I really like listening to Horowitz’s playing. He breathes such life into solo piano pieces that I often find that his performance moves me the most. It’s never boring or repetitive and that’s just so nice to listen to.

Love these videos. As a pianist I didn't expect such breakdown videos, as I thought these small details of legendary performances were just for me to debate alone. I would love to see you do a reaction/breakdown of Horowitz's performance of Chopin's 5th Polonaise in F Sharp Minor Op 44. His technique there was also crazy, with how close his elbows were to the piano and the voicing decisions he took. Really redefined that piece for me.

I'm not a pianist. I can't even play the piano, but I've been listening to piano music for decades. And I always come back to Horowitz. The emotion in his playing and his originality are unparalleled. There's never a dull moment in his playing.
