Princess Patricia's marriage to a an aristocrat who was not a member of a royal house was unusual but hardly scandalous. It was already a well established practice by 1919. Patricia's aunt, Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, had married the Marquess of Lorne as long ago as 1871, and her first cousin, Princess Louise of Wales, had married Alexander Duff, Earl of Fife, in 1889.
