If they survived, then it means they were immune. Staying inside wouldn't have saved anybody. Such a virus would incubate in people and then be spread further. Think about patient Zero wasn't even in Wuhan, he was a soldier from the USA travelling for the CIMA games in 2019. The first stool sample from the sewers of different cities was from New York, more specifically JFK where SARS2 (Modified influenza virus) was found. That spread to China and other cities around the world quickly as it would take 3 days for it to become infectious inside the host. So, the premise of this movie is entirely possible with weaponised pathogens.
