The Air Traffic Control room scene may be one of the best scenes Speilberg has ever shot. It has everything, great sound, great lighting, great blocking and staging and great acting, mostly by real ATC guys.

<i>OF COURSE</i> Ralph Mcquarrie designed the mother-ship in Close Encounters. Who else? Mcquarrie and Syd Mead need to be awarded posthumous Oscars for literally conceptualizing nearly the entirety of visual motif and aesthetic in 70's/80's science fiction movies. SW/CE3/Blade Runner wouldn't be fixtures in the cultural zeitgeist without them.

The level of physical labor required to create the incredible effects are so under-appreciated in our modern CGI world. I mean, just wow. thank you!

Steven Spielberg - on how he got child actor Cary Guffey to react, by using a clown and a guy in a gorilla suit, "...you can't do that again - its ONE TAKE". CLASSIC!

These special effects guys are sooooo damn creative! I miss the old days of models and imagination. I can totally do without CGI and AI. :(

The little orbs that came ahead of the ship are the automated reconnaissance craft for the mothership. They transition from pure light to solid mass and back. Figuratively speaking of course.
