Finally! Someone who explained it so simply and clearly and actually showed us how to Tap on & Off. Because I wasn't sure where to Tap? But seeing that sometimes the bus Tap is in the bus whereas the Train Tap is on a pole outside, was really helpful to observe.

What is the "airport surcharge"? On what kind of rides will that fee be imposed? Thanks.

Hi, your video was very informative so thank you for making it, but I had some doubts, we are 3 adults, so I guess all of us would need a seperate contactless credit card? When using the bus I tap in the front and when I am leaving I tap at the back and leave? Also while using the tram I tap outside in the station and when I leave I tap inside the tream or outside the station again? Basically I have to tap 2 times everyime I use a public transport?

Hi AT. That’s a really comprehensive and informative summary of the system. So helpful.

About the only omission (if any) is that the Opal system also applies on the inter-city trains that go well out past the Sydney Metropolitan area. Probably the one of most interest to tourists would be journeys to the Blue Mountains, but it can also do trips to the Southern Highlands, Wollongong / Kiama, and Newcastle / Hunter Valley.

You are quite correct in describing the rail systems as being ‘radial’ and centred on the traditional heart of Sydney. However that is changing to it becoming more of a complex network of services that enable journeys in all sorts of directions within Greater Sydney. At 72, I’m unlikely to see it come to fruition, but I love telling people about it. Such as:

- The centre of population of greater Sydney is no longer near the harbour, but around Parramatta, and increasingly most people live and work in the West. At present only three rail lines (mainly the T5, but also the short T6 and T7) do not go into Central Station and the CBD. However, many of the planned new lines will be more in that pattern, with many of them being more centred on Parramatta, if anything.

- The one which I think will be the long term game changer is the forthcoming (driverless) Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport Metro Line. Initially it will simply connect St Marys (on the T1 rail line) with the new WSI Airport, but ultimately be extended to form a long north-south transport spine between the northern parts of the Western suburbs, through the new airport to its southern parts. While it will enable transfers to 5 existing radial rail lines as it crosses them, it will not go anywhere near the Sydney CBD itself at all. The Western Suburbs are the main passenger catchment for the new airport, with a population close to that of Brisbane, and the aim of its metro is to provide services for them.

- That’s all reflected in the future planning documents for Sydney (like “A Metropolis of Three Cities”), which treat it as three separate but integrated cities, centred around (1) the established Eastern Harbour City, based around the original penal settlement, (2) the developing (I would now say “blossoming”) Central River City, centred on Parramatta, and (3) the spacious, emerging Western Parkland City, centred around the new airport, its aerotropolis and its ring of existing city centres.
