As an older person who doesn't have a lot of energy or flexibility anymore but still wants to grow some food, I really appreciate studies like this that show the kind of results you can expect to get with minimal effort.

A tip from an old gardener.......blooms have nothing to do with the actually process of growing the potatoes except to let you know tubers have begun growing. If you will pinch them off your potato plants will concentrate more on the potatoes.

Yukon gold is a determinate potato variety, and doesn't need hilling, which is why it performed so well for you. The other varieties must have been indeterminate type. Determinate potatoes produce their tubers in a single layer, are faster-growing, and typically don't require hilling beyond the initial planting depth, while indeterminate varieties continue to produce tubers along the stem as it grows

Conversely, don't let the quest for perfection hold you back. If you have a sprouting potato and a hole in the dirt, plant it!

I used to dig potatoes on my grandparents hobby farm. After his full time job as a plumber, he woukd go to the farm, make sure animals were all secure and fed. Whether in the barn or out to pasture grazing. Those were tge days, bringing good memory tears to my eyes, oh, to go back and experience one day with Gram and Gump

As a kid 40 some years ago there was an old guy had mobility issues he was known as the potato guy we would he help with the garden and he was give us a quarter lol. It was a big garden about 40'x30' he would sit on a chair and cut potatoes into 1/4's and just throw them on the garden on top of the dirt for hours then he would go and move them around with his cane. Then us kids would break up straw bales and cover the garden with straw then put chicken wire on the straw to keep it from blowing away and just fasten it down. Then in august we would roll up the chicken wire and the tops pulled off with the wire and rake up the straw and the potatoes were massive size of soft balls. He would tell people the potatoes didn't have to push against the dirt so they got big but they needed water everyday and straw was to keep the sun off them and people would say ya but they are probably hollow he would pull out and jack knife and cut one in half a say show me where they are hollow.

I was pretty lazy this year and grew the biggest potatoes I’ve ever grown. I started with a bag of Yukon gold from trader joes and put them in my in ground garden about 4-5 inches deep, adding a little basic organic fertilizer to the trench. Then I covered them and put a couple inches of mulched leaves on top. I watered only when the ground was dry. That’s it, and they grew so well!

G'day James. Hilling potatoes doesn't cause more tubes to grow higher up the plant, it simply prevents those that are close to the surface from growing THROUGH the surface and getting green from the light hitting them. 👍
