The thatched houses in the mountains in Japan also had open hearth -- on a tour they explained that the smoke was crucial to keep the insects out of the thatch and wood - and they said it helped preserve the wood as the heat in the open space kept the wood dry and the smoke had a perservative value leaving a carbon layer on the wood

Some of those buildings technology was still in use in villages in Russia in the early 2000s; cool storage under the floor and thick thatch (covered with bitumen paper). The walls were made of tree trunks with moss between them. They were heated by very efficient brick stoves which needed to be stoked only twice in 24 hours.

My shed is partially dug out too and ive really noticed how cool it is in summer vs my actual house

Dug into earth, insulated by soil. Natural warmth trapped inside — cozy even in freezing cold. 🏠❄🔥

I’m reading the book ‘Passive annual heat storage’ by John Hait at the moment. This book describes how to build earth shelters that require no heating or cooling.

Your image at 6.29 is almost identical to those in that book.

The well drained sand would act as insulation and long term thermal storage keeping the building cool in summer and warm in winter.

Very clever!

In the Saxon parts of the Netherlands, traditionally besides every farm house the was a Kokhoes a cookhouse, a small hut where the washing of cloth and the cooking of meals took place. (oe as in shoe).

Compressed shreaded paper blocks are being tested at an R value of 40. Perhaps a synergized building system based on using the mounds of garbage this single-use , disposable culture produces would be a worthwhile modification on the medieval methods being explained .
✌️🇵🇸🌿
