I have lived in Yogyakarta for 19 years, I moved here just after the 2006 earthquake and watched Merapi erupting also. I lived through the 2010 eruption which caused my wifes family to be evacuated from their villages 8km West of the volcano. Sinse this time I'v been observing the mountain and watched the lava dome grow to an enormous size inside the crater it's self but what concerns me most of all is the dome on the Western flank the rim. Partial collaps's have produced some amazing pyroclastic flows which seem to head towards Srumbung (Magelang, Regency, Central Java) I have video and photos taken 4km away from my wifes village. I'm no expert but I believe that the regions on the Western flanks are more endangered from a massive eruption or similar size of the 2010 thanks to this lava dome.

A documentary I watched years ago turned me on to the idea that subducted seawater dissolved in the rock and superheated at depth gave these volcanoes their explosive power. It also made me aware that without oceans, subduction might not occur at all. And finally I came to conclusion that what makes pyroclastic flows was when the rocks with their superheated gases reaches the surface, the rocks break and/or explode into small pieces and dust/ash which means that a huge lump of rock containing an enormous amount of stored heat suddenly multiplies its surface area releasing all that heat pretty much at once turning the surrounding air into a superheated cloud of gas.

My house is 7 kilometers from the peak of Mount Merapi, and when it erupted in 2010, it was the biggest eruption I have ever experienced. And every day the refugee barracks building, which is approximately 15 - 17 kilometers from the peak of Merapi, shakes due to eruptive activity, especially the windows, and very intense rumbling sounds can be heard.

I live in Yogyakarta and have witnessed the eruption of Mount Merapi three times in my life. The first was in 2006, the second in 2010, and the third in 2018 but only an effusive eruption.

Dangerous yet beautiful. Live in the city and for some people that never live near volcano for once, it's scary. But it's beautiful and the soil is rich

the idea of merapi can become a supervolcano with that amount of magma reservoir is kinda interesting, because we don't fully understand how a supervolcano formed and what it look like before eruption, we only know the aftermath of it.
