  I carried and fired the M16A1 in the 1970&apos;s as an Infantryman and cleaning the rifle to satisfy the armorer for turn-in was a real bear especially in the chamber and the bolt group considering the basic cleaning gear, solvents, and LSA available. &nbsp;The worst fouling was when we put blank adapters on it. &nbsp;The AR15 cleaning gear now available would have been a godsend for us.

  Very interesting information. Go to the site that the military sells their old gear on(lockers and the like) and you may end up with a storage rack loaded with the firearms those racks were used to hold. The LATEST time this happened was about a year or 2 ago. Some guy ended up with a F ton of military M-16s.

  The magazine well wasn&apos;t the same on the first generation 416, it was straight across the bottom versus the traditional slanted of the m16/m4. This prevented some magazines from being used in the 416 such as the early gen magpul pmags.

  The thing people don&apos;t realize is the top tier unit armorers are constantly deconstructing/reverse engineering weapon systems, &apos;tweaking&apos; for peak operation.

  Armalite got the piston from the German 43 and Mauser got it from the Russian SVT rifle system!!!

  Actually the 416 is not a direct copy of the M4 internally its different. The m4/m16 series utilize gas impingement system. The 416 utilize piston

  History is demonstrating that the U.S. Marine Corps was correct in its decision to adopt the HK416 as a replacement for the M4, as evidenced by the selection of the M27 IAR over the SIG Sauer Spear X.

  Before the special forces (advisers) in Vietnam prior to 1964 discovered the Armalite AR15 (selective fire), the &nbsp;best<br>weapon they had available was the M2 carbine (originally used in the Korean war). &nbsp;It was the selective fire verrsion<br>of the M1 carbine and our first assault rifle. &nbsp;No special forces troops were going to carry a long, bulky M14.
